Character Models (VRoid)

Character Models (VRoid)

Sumugi uses VRM files as its character format. You can create your own custom characters for free using VRoid Studio, or choose from Sumugi's built-in library of ready-to-use characters to get started right away.

What is a VRoid character?

VRoid characters are 3D character models originally designed for use in VTubing and social platforms like VRChat. They use the open VRM format, which means there is a large and active community of creators producing VRoid characters that can be used across many different applications, including Sumugi.

Creating a Custom Character with VRoid Studio

VRoid Studio is a free character creator developed by Pixiv. It lets you design fully rigged 3D characters with custom facial features, hairstyles, clothing, and more, no 3D modeling experience required. For more advanced customization, such as creating custom textures or modifying meshes, you can use tools like Blender to further refine your characters before exporting.

Steps

  • Download and install VRoid Studio from vroid.com/en/studio
  • Design your character using VRoid Studio's tools and presets
  • Export your character

Uploading Your Character

Once you have a VRM file ready, upload it to Sumugi through the Character Browser in the 3D View toolbar. Uploaded characters will appear in your My Assets library and can be used across any of your Editor Files.

Using Marketplace Characters

If you'd prefer to skip character creation, Sumugi's built-in character library and the Asset Marketplace offer a range of ready-to-use characters created by the Sumugi community. Browse the Marketplace to find characters that fit your story, and save them directly to your asset library.

Tips

VRoid characters are largely standardized, but not identical. If a character isn't behaving as expected, reach out to the team through Discord and they can help you!

Use Blender for advanced customization. While VRoid Studio covers most character creation needs, Blender gives you deeper control over textures, meshes, and rigging for creators who want to go further. Most Blender and Unity VRMs can be uploaded and used on Sumugi. If it doesn’t reach out to the team through Discord and they can help you!
