Speech Balloons
Speech Balloons
Speech balloons are added and edited in Layout View, after you've captured your panels from 3D View.
Adding a Speech Balloon
- Switch to Layout View using the mode toggle in the toolbar.
- Select the panel you want to add dialogue to by clicking it in the Panel Drawer or on the canvas.
- Click the Speech Balloon icon in the toolbar.
- A balloon will appear on the canvas, automatically parented to the selected panel.
Editing Balloon Text
With the balloon selected, type your dialogue directly into the Text field in the Property Panel on the right.
Customizing the Balloon
The Property Panel gives you several options for adjusting the look of your balloon:
- Balloon Style - choose the type of balloon (e.g. Speech, Thought, etc.)
- Font - select a font for your dialogue text
- Font Size - set the text size (Small, Medium, Large)
- Text Stroke Width - add an outline to your text
- Text Margin - adjust the spacing between the text and the edge of the balloon
Resizing and Repositioning
Click and drag the balloon to move it anywhere on the panel. Use the four corner handles to resize it.
Adjusting the Tail
The balloon tail can be adjusted to point toward the speaking character. There are three levels of control:
1. Move the tail tip
Drag the hollow purple dot at the end of the tail to point it at your character.
2. Adjust the tail base
Click the hollow dot to reveal a second solid purple dot at the base of the tail. Drag this to control where the tail originates from the balloon body.
3. Curve the tail
Clicking the base dot reveals a Bézier curve handle, letting you adjust the arc and shape of the tail for a more natural or stylized look.
Tips
- Balloons are parented to their panel. When you add a balloon, it is automatically attached to whichever panel is selected at the time. Moving or reordering that panel will keep the balloon with it.
- Work on balloons last. Since balloon editing happens in Layout View, it's best to finalize your panel captures and layout arrangement before adding dialogue, this way you won't need to redo balloon positioning after moving panels around.
- Use the tail curve for expressive dialogue. A straight tail works for most situations, but the Bézier control lets you create tails that wrap around panel elements or point from off-screen, which can add visual polish to your pages.
