Creating Your First Comic

With Sumugi Editor, you can create a visual story in just a few minutes! This guide walks through the basic steps for building a simple comic panel using the 3D scene tools and Layout View.

Step 1: Create a New Editor File

Start by creating a new project.

  • Go to the Files View in Creator Studio.
  • Click New Editor File.
  • Open the new file to launch the Sumugi Editor.

This is where you will build your scenes and create your comic panels.

Step 2: Build Your Scene in 3D View

Inside the 3D View, you can create the environment for your panel.

Use the Toolbar to add:

  • Characters
  • Props
  • Structures and environments
  • Other 3D assets

Position your characters and objects to stage the moment you want to capture.

Step 3: Position the Camera

Move the camera around the scene to frame your shot.

You can navigate the scene using keyboard controls similar to many 3D games.

Tip: You can also use your mouse or trackpad to look around the scene!

Step 4: Capture Your Panel

Once your camera is framed the way you want, press the Capture button.

Capturing a shot will:

  • Save the camera view as a panel
  • Add the panel to the Panel Drawer
  • Make the panel available in Layout View

You can capture multiple shots from the same scene to create a sequence of panels.

Step 5: Arrange Panels in Layout View

Switch to Layout View (2D View) to arrange your captured panels.

In Layout View you can:

  • Resize panels
  • Rearrange panel order
  • Adjust the visual flow of your page
  • Add additional visual elements

Step 6: Add Dialogue

Use the Speech Balloon Tool to add dialogue or narration to your panels.

You can move and resize speech balloons to fit the composition of each panel.

Step 7: Export Your Comic

When your comic is ready, use the Export button to create a shareable version of your story.

Exports can be used for publishing, sharing online, or saving your work outside the editor.

Switching Camera Views

Sumugi provides three camera modes to help you build and frame your scenes.

Capture View - Shows exactly what will appear in your final panel.

Free View - Allows you to freely explore and edit the 3D scene.

Map View - A top-down view that makes it easier to navigate larger environments.

Tip: Think of Sumugi like filming a scene.

You can build your environment once, then move the camera around to capture multiple angles and moments from the same setup.

Try It! Create a 3-Panel Comic (5 Minutes)

If you want to get comfortable with Sumugi quickly, try creating a simple three-panel comic using the steps below.

Panel 1 – Establish the Scene

  • Add a character and a simple environment or prop.
  • Move the camera to frame a wide shot showing the setting.
  • Press Capture to save the panel.

This panel introduces where the scene takes place.

Panel 2 – Show the Action

  • Adjust the character’s pose or position.
  • Move the camera closer for a medium shot.
  • Press Capture again to create the second panel.

This panel shows what is happening in the scene.

Panel 3 – Reaction or Dialogue

  • Move the camera closer for a close-up shot.
  • Press Capture to create the third panel.
  • Switch to Layout View and add a speech balloon.

This panel focuses on the character’s reaction or dialogue.

Final Step

Switch to Layout View and arrange the three panels so they read from left to right.

You’ve just created a simple comic sequence!
