Lights & Shadow

Sumugi gives you control over the lighting of each scene, allowing you to set the mood, time of day, and shadow behavior for your panels.

Accessing Light Settings

Lighting settings appear in the Property Panel when nothing is selected in the 3D View. To access them:

  • Click anywhere in the scene to deselect any selected asset, or press Escape.
  • The Property Panel will display the scene lighting controls.
ℹ️ Lighting settings apply per Board. Changes you make will only affect the currently active Board, allowing you to set a different mood or time of day for each panel.

Types of Light

Ambient Light — illuminates the entire scene evenly from all directions, with no shadows. Use this to set the overall brightness of the scene.

  • Enabled - toggle ambient light on or off
  • Intensity - controls overall brightness (default: 1.00)
  • Color - sets the color tint of the ambient light

Directional Light - behaves like sunlight or a distant lamp, casting light from a specific angle and direction. This is the primary source of shadows in your scene.

  • Intensity - controls the strength of the directional light (default: 0.30)
  • Shadow Distance - how far from the camera shadows are rendered (default: 50.00)
  • Color - sets the color tint of the directional light

Directional Rotation — controls the angle the directional light comes from, which determines where shadows fall and the overall sense of time of day.

  • Pitch - vertical angle (default: 28.65)
  • Yaw - horizontal rotation (default: 0.00)
  • Roll - axial rotation (default: 28.65)

Shadow Settings

Shadow Options — found below the lighting controls, these settings give you fine-grained control over how shadows are rendered.

  • Cast Shadows - toggle shadows on or off for the scene
  • Shadow Blur - sets the softness of shadow edges (options include Very High and others)
  • Bias - adjusts shadow offset to reduce surface acne artifacts (default: 0.00)
  • Normal Bias - additional offset along surface normals (default: 0.10)
  • Radius - controls the spread of the shadow blur (default: 1.00)
  • Near - the nearest distance at which shadows are rendered (default: 1.00)
  • Far - the furthest distance at which shadows are rendered (default: 2000.00)

Tips

Use Directional Rotation to set the time of day. A high Pitch value simulates overhead midday sun, while a low Pitch with an adjusted Yaw can create the look of golden hour or late afternoon light.

Cast Shadows can be disabled for performance. If your scene is complex and running slowly, turning off Cast Shadows is a quick way to lighten the load while you work, then re-enable before capturing your panels.
